Electrical distribution systems are the third leading cause of home structure fires. Professional Electric recommends that homeowners have their home electrically inspected, particularly if they fall in the following categories:

  • Homes 40 years or older

  • Home 10 or more years old that have had a major renovation

  • New owner of a previously owned home, should have an electrical inspection.

The following are some of the signs consumers can look for to address home wiring electrical hazards.

  • Power outages - circuit breakers that frequently trip of fuses that need replacement

  • Dim and flickering lights

  • Arcs and sparks - flashes of light or sparks in your electrical boxes

  • Sizzles and buzzes, unusual sounds from your electrical system.

  • Overheating, overheated wired can give off an odor of hot insulation

  • Switch plates or receptacle covers that are hot to the touch

  • Electrical shocks, any shock, even a mild tingle may be a warning of an electrical danger

  • Underrated panels like 60 amps should be upgraded to a 100 or 200 amp
