Electrical hazards and safety

Electrical hazards are responsible for hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries each year. The cost of residential electrical fires, is estimated at 1.6 billion dollars.

STEPS you can take for electrical safety:

  • Periodically check exposed wiring and cables - replace as necessary.

  • Check all lamp cords, extension cords and receptacles for unusual wear.

  • Trip circuit breakers every six (6) months and ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) monthly to ensure proper function.

  • Learn the location of your electrical service panels and label each circuit.

  • If fuses pop, circuit breakers trip frequently, or any appliances spark or short out, contact Professional Electric for repairs.

  • check smoke detectors every spring and fall. Smoke detectors save lives!!

Market and demographic trends illustrate the persistence of the gap between electrical safety knowledge and safe practices:

  • increasing demands for new electrical products in our home

  • people at home and at the workplace, fail to recognize and address electrical hazards

  • older homes need to be brought up to current Electrical Code standards

  • nearly 400 deaths are attributed to workplace electrocutions

  • residential electrical fires are the cause of over 500 deaths
